In the event of a tsunami, (a large, fast-moving wave of water) people should
immediately evacuate to higher ground. The City of Seward warning system may be
sounding.
The City of Seward has planned evacuation routes, signed with the above
insignia, to direct vehicles and pedestrians to the high ground. Campers and
park users on Waterfront Park should immediately evacuate the beach and go
directly west, toward Mt. Marathon.
How to know when:
If an earthquake occurs, and it's strong enough to knock you to the ground, it
is very likely a tsunami warning will be put into affect. However, note that an
earthquake some distance away could cause underwater displacement, causing a
devastating, but unseen tsunami. Seward may be fortunate enough to have
communications relayed from other communities, which may instigate a local
tsunami warning.
As we sit in the comfort of today's living, we can recognize the fact that an evacuation may seem hugely inconvenient. However, it is important to note that evacuations are for YOUR SAFETY, and not for the benefit of anyone - other than you and your family. Your quick, safe, immediate response will be appreciated by all. We do not evacuate for drill purposes.
