Seward Parks & Recreation's ...
Always ice skate and play on the ice at your own risk.
Good rule of thumb: make sure all ice is 10
inches thick. Watch for springs and
flows. We are seeking volunteers to help maintain our outdoor ice.
As weather
allows, we try
to maintain Second Lake first and Boulder Stadium, as time, conditions,
weather
and other priorities allow. (Boulder Stadium is a low priority.)

Snowfall is anticipated tonight which will change the ice
conditions. Temperatures continue to rise, watch for flows.

Ice Skate Check
Out
You can borrow a pair of ice skates for one week from Sports & Rec for a $10
deposit. 224.4054. Stop by the gym at 519 4th Avenue. We have many sizes, but
mostly kids' skates. Donations to our ice skate program are always appreciated.
Thanks. See equipment check-out.
Why not the
parking lots?
A few years ago, a group of dedicated folks set out to prove that
a good, temporary ice skate rink could be built in the City parking lot between
4th & 3rd Aves. Plow trucks, snow berms, graders, water trucks were all employed
to the hours of community work. There were days of good skating. Parents would
line the berm to shine headlights on the ice to allow safer skating. However, as
is the case in Seward, the weather warmed, ice melted. The water began to
flow under the top layer of ice, as the lot is not completely level. There was a
gap between the asphalt and a thin sheen of ice on top. It couldn't be fixed
with vehicles and was not safe for even a 100 pound skater. Our climate
conditions changing so often makes any outdoor ice hard to predict, hard to
maintain and hard to stay enthusiastic about. We focus our efforts on the
consistent, best two locations in town.
