The police department began June 18, 1912. SPD operates a community jail and dispatches for an ambulance corps, three fire departments, Alaska State Troopers, Coast Guard, Forest Service, Park Service, Alaska Railroad, Harbor Master, and Seward Public Utilities. The Agency is the hub in all emergency situations, coordinating all emergency services and civil defense. SPD is also involved with educational programs in the schools, and has a reserve program.
